Cosmic Rays from the Knee to the Ankle – Status and Prospects
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent progress in cosmic ray physics covering the energy range from about 10 eV to 10 eV is reviewed. The most prominent features of the energy spectrum are the so called ‘knee’ at E ≃ 3 · 10 eV and the ‘ankle’ at few 10 eV. Generally, the origin of the knee is understood as marking the limiting energy of galactic accelerators and/or the onset of increasing outflow of particles from the galaxy while the ankle is considered to mark the transition from galactic to extragalactic cosmic rays. Alternative theories do exist and shall be sketched. A key observable to answer the still open questions about the cosmic ray origin and to discriminate between various models is given by measuring the chemical composition or – more directly – by measuring energy spectra of individual cosmic ray mass groups. The status of present analyses is critically discussed and new experimental endeavors carried out in order to improve both the statistics and the quality of data particularly at energies above the knee will be summarized.

The Cosmic-ray Spectrum: from the knee to the ankle
This talk addresses the question, “Where is the transition from cosmic rays of galactic origin to extra-galactic cosmic-rays?” I have addressed the background of this topic recently in lectures at Erice [?] and, with Todor Stanev, in a collection of papers on various aspects of nuclear astrophysics [?]. Here I concentrate on primary composition as a signature of the transition and mention some ...

Energetic particles, traditionally called Cosmic Rays, were discovered nearly a hundred years ago, and their origin is still uncertain. Their main constituents are the normal nuclei as in the standard cosmic abundances of matter, with some enhancements for the heavier elements; there are also electrons, positrons and anti-protons. Today we also have information on isotopic abundances, which sho...
متن کاملAstroparticle Theory: Some New Insights into High Energy Cosmic Rays
Some new developments obtained in the last few years concerning the propagation of high energy cosmic rays are discussed. In particular, it is shown how the inclusion of drift effects in the transport diffusion equations leads naturally to an explanation for the knee, for the second knee and for the observed behavior of the composition and anisotropies between the knee and the ankle. It is show...
متن کاملConsequences of the common origin of the knee and ankle in cosmic ray physics
The differential energy spectrum of the cosmic radiation above solar modulation energies and up to 5 × 10 eV is correctly predicted according to a recent theory of the knee and ankle, which uses only one normalization point, arbitrarily chosen below 10 eV . This remarkable quantitative result, spanning over seven energy decades, is obtained by assuming constant spectral indices of individual io...
متن کاملCosmic Rays above the Second Knee from Clusters of Galaxies and Associated High-energy Neutrino Emission
Accretion and merger shocks in clusters of galaxies are potential accelerators of high-energy protons, which can give rise to high-energy neutrinos through pp interactions with the intracluster gas. We discuss the possibility that protons from cluster shocks make a significant contribution to the observed cosmic rays in the energy range between the second knee at ∼ 10 eV and the ankle at ∼ 10 e...
